Higher Learning Collaboration
Higher education in Belmont County is reaching out to the community in the form of the newly created Higher Learning Collaboration formed by a joint effort of Belmont Technical College, Ohio State University Extension and Ohio University Eastern Campus. The collaboration will sponsor a series of research based presentations, free and open to the public, which will address current issues of concern facing our community and society. The first event will be “Global Climate Change Update 2008: A Review of the Evidence and Outlook to the Future” on Tuesday, April 29, 7:00 p.m. in Horizon Hall at Belmont Technical College.

"Global climate change has emerged in recent years as the most widely discussed environmental topic in the world. It is also the most highly politicized. Yet, most members of the public, even those among the most highly educated, remain relatively uninformed about most aspects of this subject including: the basic history of earth's climate changes; determinants of climate change; relationships between temperature changes and human activity; and current trends in greenhouse gas emissions, concentrations and global temperatures. This knowledge gap has not prevented citizens from developing strong personal opinions on the topic (e.g. global warming is a hoax - global warming must be stopped immediately). It has however, made members of the public alternatively skeptical about information on the topic and vulnerable to being misled or confused by those who (correctly) cite isolated statistics associated with the topic (e.g. Earth's climate has been cooling for the past 5000 years). The material included in this presentation is designed to put the current trends in global climate change in context so that members of the public can have a genuine understanding of this relatively complicated and ubiquitous subject," explains Thomas Blaine, associate professor, OSU Extension. "The purpose of the slide show is to get participants to understand the basic climate history of planet Earth, including how climate is currently changing and why."
